Lock & Dam No. 16

Lock and Dam No. 16_thumb_thumb.jpg
A great place to sit and enjoy the Mississippi River, Lock and Dam No. 16 is located on the Illinois side of the Mississippi. Watch the barges pass through the channel and make sure to stop during the winter as it’s the best place to see bald eagles as they come to fish in this area of the river as it rarely freezes due to the constant churning of the waters passing through the dam.

During the spring and fall seasons, you can also find a significant amount of pelicans frequenting this popular fishing hole while migrating through Iowa for the seasons. Watch from the observation deck or grab a picnic table, which are open year round.
Tours are provided free of charge every Sunday at 2 p.m. beginning Memorial Day weekend and ending Labor Day weekend.
